A French car won best of show, but as usual two storied Italian marques were among the crowd favorites on Sunday at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

Alfa Romeo celebrated 100 years with a car on the cover of the program and poster for the concours, the 1934 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Monza. A special class was dedicated to the centennial of the company, and there was also a section devoted to just the historic 8Cs. The company’s early Grand Prix prowess was celebrated, as was the allure of its road cars.

Ferrari had three classes for its examples: grand touring, competition and the 50th anniversary of the 250 GT SWB Berlinetta.

Cars from the Prancing Horse generated among the most lusty responses from the crowd. one of the most eye-catching was a bright yellow 1964 250 LM Scaglietti Berlinetta. Wearing the no. 23, it was the third of its kind built, and was delivered to Ecurie Francorchamps in May of ’64. It placed 16th at Le Mans in June, and then won the Zolder Grand Prix in July. It’s been in the United States since 1966.

A 1957 Ferrari 250 GT LWB Scaglietti, whose design was first shown at the 1955 Paris motor show, was also striking. It had a special 14-louver specification that only appeared on the first series cars. It placed ninth in the ’57 Mille Miglia.

Interestingly, the longwheel based Ferraris of this ilk won more races than the much celebrated GT SWB Berlinettas and the 250 GTOs.
